Baseball arrived in Split in December 1918, when U.S. Navy sailors from the warships USS Pittsburgh and USS Olympia began playing on the Stari Plac — then home to Hajduk Split football club. Admiral Philip Andrews, commander of the USS Olympia, helped popularize the game among locals and was later named an honorary citizen of Split. After the Americans left, the sport continued informally, and in 1934 the first official club — Baseball Club Krupa Split — was established.

During and after World War II, organized baseball disappeared from Split. However, locals kept the spirit alive through "benza" — a simplified version played in the city's dirt lots and squares. This folk version of the game persisted until the late 1950s, when rapid urban expansion claimed most of the makeshift playing fields.

The modern revival began in 1972 when school teachers in nearby Solin reintroduced the sport. In 1974, Baseball Club Salona was founded, laying the foundation for organized baseball in Split. The first official modern game was played in 1978, and success came quickly — the club won Yugoslav championships in 1980 and 1981.

Today, BK Nada Split — often known as Nada SSM through their long-standing sponsorship by Split Ship Management — is one of Croatia's most successful baseball clubs. Winners of the first Croatian Championship in 1992 and over 10 national titles since, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 2025. Baseball remains a proud part of Split's diverse sporting identity.
